How My Private, Personal Journal Became a Bestseller reviewed in
USA Today):
If
it was hard to get tween and teen girls to read during the dark days
of winter, it's even tougher now as thoughts turn to beaches and boys.
But these four tales about teen idols, school pranks, becoming a
best-selling author and trying to get the boy should keep even the
most reluctant readers engaged:
DeVillers, author of the non-fiction Girlwise: How
to Be Confident, Cool and in Control (Random House, 2002), has
created a winning, fictional girl-power tale. It's tailor-made for
tweens dealing with the often cruel popularity contest junior and
senior high school can be. Jamie Bartlett's personal musings — about a
superheroine who stands up to mean popular girls who bully her — are
mistakenly turned in as English homework. Her teacher, a publisher and
then teen girls everywhere make Jamie a best-selling author and
heroine in her own right. But unlike some teen novels, Journal
doesn't sugarcoat the difficulty Jamie faces in trying to stand up to
her tormentor at school.

KLIATT reviews Girlwise-
|
|
In this information-packed
book the author gathers advice from everyone and anyone. Professional
women as well as ordinary teens are consulted for answers to dilemmas
that everyone faces every day. For example, how do students deal with
rumors, bullies and math? These are just the tip of the iceberg when it
comes to the issues covered in this exciting guidebook on how to journey
through the tumultuous teenage years. The Web site is a little
dull but it does allow you to e-mail the author so that you might be
included in her new book. A definite purchase for all YA collections,
this should give confidence to readers who want to know what to do and
how to do it in even the most awkward situations. It has superb advice
for females everywhere. KLIATT Codes: JS*—Exceptional book, recommended
for junior and senior high school students. 2002, Random House, Prima,
253p. index.

From School Library
Journal: Review of GIrlwise
Grade 8 Up-Teenage girls have all kinds of concerns from seemingly
trivial ones such as how to say "hi" to more momentous
occasions like the first job interview. Along with these concerns,
this book covers a wide range of topics with an overall intent of
guiding girls toward becoming well-balanced young women. Successful
people of all ages are tapped for advice. Hip and chatty in style,
GirlWise encourages a self-confident, independent attitude that
includes being considerate of others. As part of fostering healthy
self-esteem, it tells how to create one's own style without becoming a
fashion zombie, how to appreciate and take sensible care of one's
body, and how to deal with rejection. While body image is discussed,
it is more in the vein of self-acceptance, diet, and exercise-this
book does not venture into the realm of sexual issues. Readers can
also find out how to unclog a toilet, change a diaper, do laundry, and
start a band. The last two chapters, "Be Caring" and
"Be Conscious," point the way toward attitudes and actions
that result in a truly mature person. This is a silly, serious, and
totally fun book for those who want to take charge of their lives and
evolve into first-class, well-rounded adults. Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

www.planetpretty.com the #1
beauty/lifestyle site on the net for teens and young women
says this about GirlWise :" An
invaluable compilation of advice for teens and even adults....We found
ourselves nodding at so much of what we were reading , thinking, gee,
we really should be more like that.... We found ourselves wishing that
we'd known these things growing up...The introductions were both
bittersweet and hilarious - DeVillers shares her wit and wisdom with
us, and reminds us what it was like to be a teen...(be sure to check
out her cringe-worthy prom-story)..Younger teens will feel comfortable
reading this book, there's no sense of discomfort, or overt sexuality,
that too many books geared to teens seem to include. Older teens
will learn great tips on life, from 100 wise women with varied
backgrounds and outlooks on life...This book includes advice from many
women from many industries, it give girls the inside skinny on life -
We used to swallow everything when we were younger, girls today are
very sophisticated, and it's nice for them to gain insight into the
world, without losing the magic....A great gift idea, and a book for
moms and their daughters to bond over."
